Saturday August 1, Knoxville Table tennis Club’s (KTTC) Foothills VII, held in Knoxville, was, top-to-bottom the best in KTTC history.

Barney J. Reed, tournament 1st seed, arrived at the finals by losing only one game to Peter Moo of Jamaica in the Championship round robin.  He then defeated DiDi DeSouza, the 2nd seed, in the semi-finals.  With two people advancing, Peter Moo, the tournament 3rd seed, faced and defeated Michael Henry in the other semi final, thus setting the stage for a finals showdown between 1st and 3rd, Barney and Peter.  The exciting showdown was punctuated with extreme attacks and unbelievable counter attacks from both sides. Barney’s best of seven win (6,9,8,6) was closer than the score indicates.  For their efforts, they each took home $500 and $300 respectively.

Meanwhile, DiDi DeSouza, the perennial Foothills winner, lost only one game in his group to Michael Henry, thus advancing him to the semi-finals where he lost to the over powering offense of Barney Reed.

Didi won $200 as third-place money in the singles.  However, he and his partner Archie Jordan both pocketed another $107 for their 3800-doubles win over Barney and Mr. Joseph Newgarden. In the doubles, after being down 0-2 to DiDi and Archie, Barney and Mr. Newgarden came back to tie the match at 2-2.  In the fifth and final game, it appeared that Barney and Mr. Newgarden might win the exciting match when they led 10-9.  However, DiDi and Archie came back to win at 12-10.  This was probably the most watched and certainly the most cheered match of the day, especially after a few of the winners hit by Mr. Newgarden.

There was exciting play in all divisions.  In the A Division Anugu Manus, Michael Lalvani, and Slawomir Waclawik won $300, $200, and $100 for their respective 1st, 2n, and 3rd place wins.  All other division winners received beautiful plaques.  These and the other winners are:

KNOXVILLE TABLE TENNIS CLUB
FOOTHILLS VI, GOLD DOLLAR UPSET OPEN
By Bill Neely

Knoxville Table Tennis Club was the site of the first known Upset Tournament. This tournament concept was piggy-backed on a giant round robin format. The purpose of the Upset component was to allow lower-rated players the possibility of winning cash, whereas heretofore the cash prizes were always reserved for the higher level players.

Giant Round Robin

The winners in tournament play are:
Championship Division:  1st DiDi De Sousa, 2nd Slawomir Waclawik, 3rd Jude Lam
A Division:  1st Kin Chan, 2nd Xiaofeng Guo, 3rd William Mobley
B Division:  1st Steven Jenkins, 2nd Paul Singh, 3rd Michael Fang
C Division:  1st Chris Malis, 2nd Trevor Chan, 3rd Mikey Nguyen
D Division:  1st Archie Jordan, 2nd Cody Crook, 3rd Grayson Goble

To set the atmosphere for the Gold Dollar theme, each player received one gold dollar as they checked in.

The major upset winners are:
1st: Michael Fang-$60.00, 2nd Grayson Goble-$30.00, 3rd Mark Tucker-$20.
There were also 19 other upset winners who banked instant cash in amounts of $5.00 to $15.00, with the total upset win money being $260.00.

Young Michael Fang, in addition to winning two $15.00-dollar upsets, collected another $30.00 as the Grand-Upset winner by racking up the greatest margin of victory (490-points) in a single match. The photo shows Michael, with his Division B third-place plaque, reaching into the fish bowl to claim his Grand Upset winning $30.00.

The Upset concept evoked a lot of interest, especially in the method of instantaneous collection of the wins:  Upon submitting their match sheets for verification, except for the Grand Winner, they could reach into the fish bowl and count out their money immediately after the win.

We highly recommend the use of the Upset Concept to add spice to your events and increase interest for the intermediate and lower level players.

We are grateful to our three great supporters, Newgy, ZeroPong, and Spin-Tech, without whom these tournaments would be very difficult to produce.
