Congratulations to all of the above winners and to Colton for being the third place Division B winner and being the grand upset winner and taking home 75-gold dollars for his five upsets.
Also, congratulations to Yevgeniy for his fantastic win over DiDi.  This has only happened once in out ten-tournament history.  Danny Seemiller did it in 2006.

We look forward to seeing all of you (y’all) again, perhaps August 1.  We anticipate more money in the Championship round, money in the A Division, and money for the Grand Upset winner.  We also expect a national celebrity to participate in the play.  Watch out DiDi.

KNOXVILLE TABLE TENNIS CLUB
FOOTHILLS VI, GOLD DOLLAR UPSET OPEN
By Bill Neely

Knoxville Table Tennis Club was the site of the first known Upset Tournament. This tournament concept was piggy-backed on a giant round robin format. The purpose of the Upset component was to allow lower-rated players the possibility of winning cash, whereas heretofore the cash prizes were always reserved for the higher level players.

Giant Round Robin

The winners in tournament play are:
Championship Division:  1st DiDi De Sousa, 2nd Slawomir Waclawik, 3rd Jude Lam
A Division:  1st Kin Chan, 2nd Xiaofeng Guo, 3rd William Mobley
B Division:  1st Steven Jenkins, 2nd Paul Singh, 3rd Michael Fang
C Division:  1st Chris Malis, 2nd Trevor Chan, 3rd Mikey Nguyen
D Division:  1st Archie Jordan, 2nd Cody Crook, 3rd Grayson Goble

To set the atmosphere for the Gold Dollar theme, each player received one gold dollar as they checked in.

The major upset winners are:
1st: Michael Fang-$60.00, 2nd Grayson Goble-$30.00, 3rd Mark Tucker-$20.
There were also 19 other upset winners who banked instant cash in amounts of $5.00 to $15.00, with the total upset win money being $260.00.

Young Michael Fang, in addition to winning two $15.00-dollar upsets, collected another $30.00 as the Grand-Upset winner by racking up the greatest margin of victory (490-points) in a single match. The photo shows Michael, with his Division B third-place plaque, reaching into the fish bowl to claim his Grand Upset winning $30.00.

The Upset concept evoked a lot of interest, especially in the method of instantaneous collection of the wins:  Upon submitting their match sheets for verification, except for the Grand Winner, they could reach into the fish bowl and count out their money immediately after the win.

We highly recommend the use of the Upset Concept to add spice to your events and increase interest for the intermediate and lower level players.

We are grateful to our three great supporters, Newgy, ZeroPong, and Spin-Tech, without whom these tournaments would be very difficult to produce.

The Knoxville Table Tennis Club conducted the Foothills V Open at the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA on August 23, 2008 with 43-players in attendance. Players ranged from Cleveland, Ohio to Atlanta, Georgia, and from Charlotte, North Carolina to Nashville, Tennessee. The play resulted in 24-upsets: the greatest upset came by the hand of young Peyton Fakharpour, from Lexington, Kentucky, in an underdog win, where he overcame a 416-point pre-game deficit to win third place in Division D.
